Abstract
Economic transformation of the former German Democratic Republic has led to a decline in economic activities, accompanied by a growth of unemployment and total development stagnation due to strong competitiveness. This concerned mostly rural areas. The article describes possibilities of rural development within Integrated Rural Development and Programme LEADER on a case of the Federative Republic of Brandenburg. It stresses also a stabilisation function of local economies in the times of economic crises.
